READ COLLEGE PIONEERS DANCER WELLBEING WITH THEALE WELLBEING CENTRE

Reading, England – 2nd November 2016 – READ College, the most successful performing arts Foundation Course provider in the country, is at the forefront of encouraging and securing dancer’s physical and mental wellbeing and is delighted to be partnering Theale Wellbeing Centre in giving their students access to the most advanced technology in this area.

In recent years there has been an increased focus on addressing the physical and mental wellbeing of dancers, looking at dancers as athletes and proactively preventing injury. As part of the READ College syllabus Michael Palfrey from Theale Wellbeing Centre attends some dance classes and uses the ‘ViMove’ wearable sensor technology to give each student information about their body’s strengths and weaknesses. This enables us to devise a programme of exercise and manual therapy to help strengthen and protect their bodies.

Jamie Read, Co-Director of READ College commented: “We are delighted to be partnering with Theale Wellbeing Centre to ensure the physical wellbeing of our students, who we are training to go on to have long and healthy careers. November is ‘The Month of Dance’ for in the Reading Year of Culture Programme so there can be no better time to highlight the important work now taking place in this area. At READ College we are dedicated to ensuring the wellbeing of our students and are also signed up to the Mental Health Charter #TimeforChange Campaign for the Dance and Drama Profession. We are dedicated to producing young, healthy and talented performers empowered to manage their long dance careers.”

Michael Palfrey, Principal Osteopath and Director of Theale Wellbeing Centre said: “Dancing is a physically demanding career choice and we are delighted to be assisting READ College in assuring the future health of their students. It is vital to give young performers the information they require to manage and maintain their health at an early stage. This helps to instil a respect for their bodies, a positive approach to physical development and training and a proactive approach to preventing injuries. We look forward to a long partnership with READ College and helping them to produce fit and healthy dancers who will go on to have long careers.”
